Perpetual Ocean

In one of NASA's most captivating visualizations to date,  we see the complex, striking beauty that represents our planet's ocean currents.

PERPETUAL OCEAN:  In one of NASA's most captivating visualizations to date,  we see the complex, striking beauty that represents our planet's ocean currents. Revealing a previously unrealized vision of the planet, in a true testament to it's popular appeal, it's been cross-posted all over YouTube. Yet, despite conjuring up the work of revered artist Vincent Van Gogh, this imagery is based on the outcome of multiple scientific endeavors.

At its core, Perpetual Ocean is a cumulative effort of multiple earth observing satellites, huge number-crunching super computers and, of course, talented teams of humans that have the vision and skill to generate such data,  visualize it, and share it with the world.  While at NASA, Victoria  produced this condensed version of the original 10 minute visualization in preparation for entry into the SIGGRAPH computer animation festival.

Did the creators (NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio) of this visualization seek to make it look like Van Gogh?  Well you'd just have to ask them. But  regardless of their answer, Perpetual Ocean is a perfect example of what happens when art and science cross paths:  inspiration. And that's just what Verglas Media is all about.
